Europe’s most breath-taking winter destinations

Travel in style this season with NetJets

During the winter months, Europe becomes enchantingly beautiful as the rooftops are carpeted with white and the lakes turn to glistening ice.

For those looking for inspiration for their next winter holiday in Europe, we have created a list of a few destination that truly come alive in the winter months, offering everything from spectacular scenery, to luxurious hotels and restaurants.

Here are four of our favourite European destinations to visit in winter:

Hallstätt, Austria

This small village is found perched on the shores of Austria's Hallstätter See (about an hour's drive east of Salzburg). One of the most quintessential story book villages imaginable, it is full of 12th-century churches, romantic candlelit restaurants, and a charming market square that bustles with Christmas spirit during the winter.

Stay in one of the village’s hotels such as the Seehotel Grüner Baum, and spend your days admiring the snow-capped Dachstein Mountains; take a horse-drawn carriage for a tour; go skiing or snowshoe hiking; or simply relax and warm up in the hotel’s sauna.

Nearest airport: Salzburg Airport

Budapest, Hungary

While Budapest in beautiful all year round, it is truly lovely in winter. Set out on foot and explore the city’s grand museums, cafes and galleries before ice-skating in the central park Városligeti Műjégpálya. Warm up in one of Budapest’s famous ornate thermal bats and spend the evening enjoying one of the city’s many exclusive restaurants.

Nearest airport: Ferenc Liszt Airport

Bergen, Norway

This idyllic Nordic village is worth visiting in its own right thanks to its brightly coloured wooden buildings, picturesque harbour, and sweeping views of the surrounding fjords; however, it is the spectacular views of the Northern Lights over the winter months that make it an unmissable destination.

After a day of exploring and an evening admiring the lights, retreat to the newly refurbished and luxurious Hotel Norge in Bergen's main square. Enjoy a warming night cap before retiring and doing it all over again.

Nearest airport: Flesland Airport

Arosa, Switzerland

An Alpine village nestled in the Schanfigg Valley, Arosa looks like a snowy fairy-tale setting come to life. The Swiss ski resort is the perfect place to unwind and reset in a place of quiet, understated luxury and incredible natural beauty. With some of the best skiing in the area, it is ideal for both those looking to be active and to relax in luxury.

Arosa is home to the Tschuggen Grand Hotel, the village’s oldest and grandest hotel, first opened in 1877. Redesigned by Carlo Rampazzi, the eight-floor hotel is stunningly decorated and sits dramatically against a background of snowy peaks. With its own unique, private mountain railway, you can reach the skiing and hiking area Arosa Lenzerheide with a push of a button, avoiding any crowds or queues. Enjoy a few hours of skiing before visiting the Tschuggen Bergoase, the beautiful onsite spa.

Alternatively, if you are looking for a family space, Valsana Hotel & Apartments are the ideal option.

Nearest airport: Altenrhein Airport
